Terms Relating to Creating Assessments

Test

When George has prepared all his items – containing the prompts (or questions) about capitals, the interactions needed for the test-taker to answer them, and the supporting material (assets) – he will need to assemble them in a test. The TAO Glossary defines a Test as "An organized collection of Items which are used to measure the performance of a Candidate with respect to that person’s level of mastery of a given subject. Assessments contain all instructions required for navigation through a sequence of Items. They also calculate the final score earned by the Test-taker".

The term test is quite clear, but there is a problem. Unlike with traditional tests, a test in TAO cannot be directly taken by test-takers. Tests in TAO contain all the subject content necessary, but are not yet in the right format for test-takers to be able to take them. Despite this, you are quite likely to hear mention of test-takers taking tests. Strictly speaking, this is not possible: the test needs to be put into the form of a delivery before a test-taker can take it. Deliveries are discussed in the next lesson.

Below is an image of George’s geography test. It shows the first item of the test, which is the one about Myanmar.
